Extra Car Insurance Consideratons For Your College Age Driver

Insurance Blog

Sending your child off to college can be nerve-wracking, especially if they insist upon making the drive themselves or plan to commute home regularly for visits. You can help offset some of your worries by making sure you have sufficient coverage to help keep them safe. The following are a few types of coverages that you may want to add to their basic policy.

Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance, especially towing, helps ensure that your newly independent child doesn't get stuck on the side of the road due to a breakdown. This can bring peace of mind at any time, but it's especially helpful to have during the winter weather conditions that could be present during the typical college term.

Most insurance companies even make it easy to use the service. You can either keep the number in your child's glove box, or you can see if your company provides a roadside service app for smartphones. With the app, your child can bring help with the touch of a button.

Rental car

Rental car insurance can be helpful in certain circumstances, such as if your car breaks down for an extended period, but you need to make sure your child qualifies. First, check that the insurance covers drivers in your child's age bracket. Some policies only cover drivers over a certain age, such as 25.

Next, verify that there are actual rental agencies in your child's college area that rent to drivers your child age and that these agencies are covered by your insurance. If not, then this is one extra coverage you may want to take a pass on for now.

Comprehensive coverage

Many people skip the comprehensive coverage on a college car, especially if it's an old beater. This can be a problem for many reasons. The most common reason is your child is in an accident with an uninsured motorist or they are at fault, which means that car repairs are out of pocket. The liability portion only pays for the other driver's car.

Another issue often overlooked is that your child is likely keeping expensive college textbooks or even their laptop or other tech equipment in the car. Theft could result in the loss of hundreds of dollars worth of items, but a comprehensive policy provides coverage for property within the vehicle as well as for the damage to the vehicle itself.
